This award is one of the most important in the world of documentary film, as it focuses on promoting the production of documentaries that address social, political, and cultural issues of global relevance. Over the years, the DOX:AWARD has highlighted documentaries of great importance to society, this year it awarded “Motherland” by Alexander Mihalkovich & Hanna Badziaka, which addresses the culture of violence and abuse in the Belarusian army; “Seven Winters in Tehran” by SteffiNiederzoll, a complaint to the judicial system that sentences an Iranian woman to death for defending herself against rape; and “Mrs. Hansen & the Bad Companions” by Jella Bethmann, a reflection on living with people who consider themselves “do not fit” into the norms and frameworks of society.
This year, the DOX:AWARD will present a selection of documentaries from around the world, including works from Latin America, Europe, Asia and Africa. The documentaries address a wide range of topics, from the refugee crisis in Europe, to the fight for women’s rights in Africa, to the exploration of identity and sexuality in Latin America.
This award not only celebrates cinematographic excellence, but also promotes critical reflection and debate on issues relevant to today’s society. DOX:AWARD is an example of the power of documentary film to inform, educate and generate social change.
